Keep on keeping on: Resilience Engineering for the Safety Practitioner
The world is growing increasingly messy and our approaches to managing safety are struggling to keep up and, in some cases, are falling behind. What’s worse, we still struggle with the gap between how we imagine work should and does happen and how people actually get work done on a daily basis. How are we supposed to create a safe organization in these conditions?
What if part of the problem is how we are framing the problem? Instead of seeing safety as a goal to be achieved, what if we saw the management of risks, pressures, and challenges as an ongoing, dynamic process of managing and leveraging adaptive capacity. Sounds crazy? I don’t blame you. It’s not how we were taught to think about safety management.
This session will introduce the field of resilience engineering, a science-based discipline focused on helping people and organizations manage safety and operations in an increasingly complex world. Through a combination of discussion and practical application, we will identify ways to learn about, monitor, and leverage the adaptive capacity in your organization to manage critical risks and create the conditions for resilient performance.
