From Risk to Resilience: How AI Is Transforming Fatigue Management

Fatigue is a critical safety concern in high-risk work like turnarounds because it impairs decision-making, reaction times, and physical coordination, significantly increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. With back-to-back turnarounds scheduled this past spring, Nova Chemicals’ leadership recognized the urgency to review and optimize existing countermeasures for greater effectiveness in relation to fatigue risks.

Driven by this recognition, they initiated a more comprehensive Fatigue Risk Management (FRM) approach, which included bringing in a fatigue risk management consultant and integrating innovative AI-based fatigue assessment technology. They integrated the Tenvos AI tool that detects impairment from just 6 seconds of speech into a pilot project that spanned both turnaround events.
