Understanding Performance Modes: A Framework for Error Reduction and Safety Enhancement

The session will demonstrate how understanding performance modes (Skill, Rule, Knowledge (SRK) classification system developed by J. Rasmussen of the Risø Laboratory) can enhance error prevention, detection, and correction across various workplace scenarios. Based on task familiarity and required attention levels, participants will learn to identify which mode they or their colleagues are operating in. This awareness is valuable for pre-job briefings, corrective action development, and real-time error prevention.

Special attention will be given to the relationship between performance modes and psychological safety, emphasizing how organizations can better support workers as they transition between modes. We will explore practical applications through examples, helping attendees recognize when they’re moving from one performance mode to another and how to adjust their approach accordingly.

The presentation concludes with actionable strategies for applying performance mode awareness in everyday workplace situations, from routine tasks like computer login procedures to complex activities such as troubleshooting equipment failures. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of leveraging this knowledge to enhance safety protocols and reduce human error in their organizations.

This session is ideal for safety professionals, supervisors, and anyone interested in human performance improvement and error reduction strategies.
