Chasing “Zero Harm” – Lessons from the C-Suite

The presentation delves into the “Zero Harm” challenges and realities that CEOs, C-Suite leaders, and safety professionals face, including the intricate balancing of stakeholder needs. Drawing on a comprehensive study of four ASX listed companies from 2012 to 2016, supplemented with additional insights post-2016, we will explore pivotal ideas you may incorporate into your daily operations.

While strides in worker safety have undeniably saved lives and boosted productivity, the International Labour Organization (ILO) still reports over 7,000 daily fatalities due to work-related incidents worldwide. The mining sector, in particular, remains one of the highest risk industries despite significant safety improvements. Using a learning orientation lens, one of the six characteristics of a High Reliability Organisation (HRO), this presentation examines the impact of “Zero Harm” messaging within organizations and C-suite communications to investors.

The findings are profound: Zero Harm messaging can impede organizational learning opportunities, investor responses to such messaging are not fully integrated into investment strategies. This presentation will provide tangible alternate solutions that can be adopted and implemented immediately.
