Risk-Taking and Avoidance: Lessons from Behavioral Research
Human decision behavior in the face of risk can be inconsistent and irrational, in predictable ways! These so-called biases are well documented in cognitive and behavioral research. First, these findings highlight the fact that risk and safety are subjective in nature, not just statistical constructs that can be measured objectively. This consideration must remain at the core of any attempt to manage safety.
Second, this body of knowledge provides deeper insights into the ways human behavioral shortcomings constitute potential obstacles to safety performance, and therefore it may hold keys to designing more effective interventions for improving safety behavior.
In this presentation, I will share some key examples and learnings of the above.
Philippe Delquié is a professor at the George Washington University in Washington DC. His expertise is in human and machine decision-making, risk attitude measurement, and business analytics. He has developed high-touch executive seminars and consulted for major organisations in several sectors, on five continents, on topics in decision processes, technology management, innovation, safety, and more.
A hallmark of Delquié ‘s research is to fuse insights from experimental studies of human behaviour and analytic modelling to design novel decision-making methods and tools. His research papers have been published in the world’s leading academic reviews in his field.
Prior to joining GW, Philippe held faculty appointments at INSEAD, École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business (visiting), and the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a BS in civil engineering from École Nationale des Travaux Publics, Lyon, and MS and PhD degrees from MIT. Philippe is a dual citizen of France and the United States.
